Nottingham Forest are at the start of a new chapter, with Oliver Glasner taking the reins at the City Ground after delivering titles in back-to-back seasons at Crystal Palace.

Could Forest stand at the foot of a golden age? Let's not get ahead of ourselves, but the Austrian's credentials speak for themselves, having also won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022, beating Rangers on penalties.

However, Glasner is going to be up against it from the get-go, with Elliot Anderson sold to Manchester City in a record-breaking £116m deal.

How Glasner is replacing Elliot Anderson

Ahead of the World Cup, England manager Thomas Tuchel said that Anderson is "one of the best midfielders in the Premier League". He wasn't wrong, with the 23-year-old's move to Man City rubber-stamping that fact.

It's only been two years since Anderson left boyhood club Newcastle United and signed for Forest in a £35m deal. How the Magpies must rue that PSR-led decision, with Anderson growing into a superstar.

He helped Nuno's side up and into Europe, and he proved a difference-maker during tough times last year, a duel-winning talisman in the middle of the park, instrumental in helping his side find form and avoid a dreaded relegation battle.

Anderson is no longer a Forest player. That one stings, and it will for some time. However, we're standing at the beginning of an exciting new era, and Glasner may have his sights set on the club's next version of the England international.

The next Anderson wants to join Nottingham Forest

Ibrahim Sangare has signed a new contract with Nottingham Forest, and Glasner is reunited with Xaver Schagler, who has joined the City Ground side on a free transfer.

Glasner wants more, and according to The Telegraph, Sweden international Lucas Bergvall is right at the top of the shopping list. Bergvall wants to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, and has intimated his desire to explore a move to Nottingham.

Spurs want £60m for the 20-year-old, who is also wanted by Newcastle, though they may need to lower their demands, with the youngster failing to cement a starting berth across either of his two full Premier League terms with the Londoners.

Bergvall is a stylish midfielder, progressive on the ball and endowed with balletic footwork. He is far from fully-formed, but Newcastle took a punt on Anderson, once upon a time, and that one paid off handsomely.

Bergvall is obviously not hitting the same beats as Anderson, but consider this: when the Tricky Trees swiped Newcastle's young midfield prospect, they did not sign the full package. They nurtured a talented but meandering midfielder, and with Bergvall, they could do the same.

He is not a carbon-copy. Bergvall is silkier and more progressive, but he lacks Anderson's physicality and will never be so masterful a dueller.

All the more important that Schagler has signed. The 28-year-old Austrian is a Glasner favourite, well-rounded and as smart as they come. Bergvall, meanwhile, is his own man, and while he has been embroiled in a sticky situation at Tottenham over the past couple of years, he has shone for the most part, winning the Europa League but also hardening his resolve across tough times.

When Anderson broke through at Newcastle in 2023/24, he showed plenty of promise, but he was a wide margin away from the current superstar who is thriving for club and country, the second-most-expensive British player in history.

It's also worth noting that Anderson emerged while the sun was shining on St. James' Park. He was unable to wedge his way past Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali. Conversely, Bergvall has been hurled in at the deep end with a Spurs side plumbing new depths in the Premier League.

Glasner could shape this one into a superstar. Nottingham Forest have pulled off a few shrewd midfield deals already this summer, but this would be the marquee move to lift them back into the ascendancy.
