Test cricket returns for both West Indies and Sri Lanka as the two sides begin their World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign battle at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. The hosts have not played a Test match since December 2025, while Sri Lanka is returning to the longest format after an entire year away. With both teams eager to improve their standing in the WTC cycle, the series presents an important opportunity to gain valuable points and momentum.

The Caribbean side will rely on experienced names such as Kemar Roach, Alzarri Joseph, Shai Hope and captain Roston Chase as they search for their first victory of the current WTC cycle. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, arrive with a settled playing XI featuring Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis and a pace-heavy bowling attack led by Lahiru Kumara. Historically, contests between these two teams in the West Indies have been closely fought, and another competitive battle is expected in Antigua.

Antigua Weather Forecast for the 1st Test

The five-day forecast for the 1st Test at North Sound suggests warm and humid tropical conditions, with occasional showers possible throughout the match but no indication of prolonged rain interruptions.

  • Day 1 (Thursday): Patchy rain possible under mostly cloudy skies with a high of 28°C and a low of 27°C. There is around a 30-40% chance of light showers during the day, with an easterly wind at 18-20 mph (around 30-33 km/h).
  • Day 2 (Friday): Similar conditions with patchy rain nearby, high of 28°C and low of 27°C. Daytime chance of showers around 30-40%, humidity high, with a slightly lighter easterly breeze at 16-18 mph (29 km/h).
  • Day 3 (Saturday): Slightly lower temperatures with a high of 27°C and low of 26°C under partly cloudy skies with a reduced 20-30% chance of rain. Easterly winds around 15-17 mph (28 km/h).
  • Day 4 (Sunday): Patchy rain more likely with a high of 28°C and low of 26°C. Chance of showers around 40-50% (potentially the wettest day), accompanied by an easterly wind at 17-19 mph (30 km/h).
  • Day 5 (Monday): If the match extends, expect mostly cloudy conditions with a high of 28°C and low of 27°C, a lower 20-30% chance of rain, and easterly winds around 17-19 mph (31 km/h).

Sir Vivian Richards Stadium Pitch Report

The surface at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium has traditionally provided assistance to fast bowlers, particularly during the opening two days of a Test match. The pitch generally offers good carry and seam movement early on, allowing pacers to extract bounce with the new ball.

Batters who negotiate the initial testing phase can enjoy productive periods at the crease as the wicket settles. However, patience will be crucial because stroke-making is rarely straightforward at this venue during the first innings. As the match progresses, cracks and rough patches could begin to appear, bringing spinners into the contest during the latter stages.

Given the expected weather conditions and the venue’s history, captains winning the toss may be inclined to bowl first and take advantage of any early moisture and cloud cover. Overall, the pitch is expected to provide a balanced contest between bat and ball, with seamers likely to play a major role throughout the Test.
