India remained firmly in control of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur as Day 2 belonged almost entirely to the hosts. After piling up a commanding 564/8 before declaring their first innings, the Indian bowlers wasted little time in putting Afghanistan under immense pressure. The visitors struggled to build partnerships as wickets fell at regular intervals during the evening session, leaving them staring at a huge deficit. Among the highlights of the day was a superb delivery from Prasidh Krishna that sent Afghanistan opener Sediqullah Atal back to the pavilion and gave the fast bowler his first Test wicket on Indian soil.

The breakthrough arrived in the ninth over of Afghanistan’s innings and showcased Prasidh at his best. Operating from around the wicket, the tall pacer delivered a ball that landed on a testing length before sharply jagging back into the left-handed Sediqullah Atal.

Attempting to defend the delivery, Atal was caught in two minds as the ball moved significantly after pitching. A faint inside edge was all he managed before the delivery crashed into the stumps, sending the bails flying. It was a moment of pure joy for Prasidh, who celebrated his first Test wicket on home soil with visible excitement.

Atal had looked composed during his brief stay at the crease and appeared determined to weather the early storm. However, the quality of the delivery proved too good for the Afghan opener. The dismissal also handed India the perfect start with the new ball and set the tone for the remainder of Afghanistan’s innings.

The wicket underlined Prasidh’s ability to extract movement even on a surface that had largely favoured the batters during India’s first innings. His disciplined lines and probing lengths consistently troubled the Afghan batters, making him one of India’s standout performers with the ball.

India in the driving seat

Earlier in the day, India declared their first innings at a mammoth 564/8, putting Afghanistan under enormous scoreboard pressure. Captain Shubman Gill led from the front with a magnificent 126, anchoring the innings with authority and composure. Rishabh Pant provided valuable support with an entertaining 81, while Washington Sundar added the finishing touches with an unbeaten 52 that helped India surge past the 500-run mark.

For Afghanistan, Mohammad Saleem Safi emerged as the lone bright spot with the ball. The pacer produced a spirited effort and finished with career-best figures of 6/140 despite receiving little support from the other end.

Faced with the daunting task of responding to India’s huge total, Afghanistan endured a difficult start. Debutant spinner Manav Suthar made an immediate impact by claiming his maiden Test wicket, while Prasidh continued to trouble the batting line-up with his pace and movement.

Prasidh added another important scalp to his tally by dismissing Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi for 20, further denting the visitors’ hopes of mounting a meaningful reply. By the close of the session, Afghanistan had slipped to 102/4, still a long way behind India’s imposing first-innings score.
