The wait for 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi‘s senior international debut continued after India left him out of the playing XI for the first T20I against England at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday. While the decision was largely expected, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that postponing the youngster’s debut for too long could pile additional pressure on the teenager when he finally gets his chance. Despite the growing anticipation surrounding Suryavanshi, India’s team management has preferred a cautious approach, allowing the youngster more time to settle into the senior setup before handing him his maiden international cap.

India stick with proven opening pair

Ahead of the series opener, there was considerable speculation over whether Suryavanshi would be handed an opportunity after his impressive rise through the ranks. However, captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed at the toss that India had decided to continue with their established opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.

The decision reflects the management’s faith in the combination that played a key role in India’s victorious 2026 T20 World Cup campaign. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and the selectors appear keen on introducing Suryavanshi gradually rather than exposing him to immediate expectations in a high-profile bilateral series.

Although the teenager remains on the sidelines, being part of the national squad at just 15 years of age is already viewed as a remarkable milestone. The experience of sharing the dressing room with some of India’s biggest stars is expected to accelerate his development even before he steps onto the field.

Sunil Gavaskar explains why the debut could become tougher for Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Speaking on Sony Sports, Gavaskar acknowledged that Suryavanshi’s age may help him deal with pressure, but warned that every match he misses naturally raises expectations surrounding his eventual debut. The batting legend believes that while the teenager is unlikely to overthink the occasion, public expectations will continue to grow the longer he remains out of the playing XI. Every passing game increases the spotlight, making his eventual debut one of the most anticipated moments of the series.

At the same time, Gavaskar highlighted the positives of spending time with experienced international cricketers, suggesting that the learning environment itself is invaluable for such a young player.

“It will put him under more pressure whenever he gets an opportunity. But at 15 years of age, you don’t think too much about pressure. He knows that if he gets the opportunity in the second or third game, he will have to deliver almost immediately. That’s there. But he is happy to be around. This Indian team is full of lovely, tremendous players, and it is just fantastic for him to be learning from them,” Gavaskar said.

Could Manchester finally be his moment?

Suryavanshi’s debut may not be too far away. Senior opener Samson has struggled for runs during India’s tour of the United Kingdom, prompting fresh debate over changes at the top of the order. With the second T20I scheduled to be played at Old Trafford in Manchester on July 4, reports indicate that the teenage left-hander is firmly in contention to receive his maiden international cap. If Samson’s lean run continues, the selectors may find it increasingly difficult to ignore the calls for Suryavanshi’s inclusion.

For now, India have chosen patience over excitement. But if the youngster gets his opportunity in Manchester, all eyes will be on one of the country’s brightest batting prospects as he looks to justify the enormous hype surrounding his name.
