Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayA UFC Hall of Famer believes Max Holloway squandered a massive opportunity after Conor McGregor’s injury at UFC 329.
Former UFC featherweight and BMF champ Max Holloway earned a first-round win over Conor McGregor at UFC 329 last Saturday, albeit under unfortunate circumstances.
McGregor, who was making his first Octagon appearance in five years at UFC 329, suffered a right knee injury just seconds into his fight with Holloway last weekend. As of this writing, the exact nature of McGregor’s injury is uncertain after the fight was waved off just minutes into Round 1.
In his post-fight interview, Holloway called for a trilogy bout with McGregor once the former two-division champion is fully recovered. Despite calls for McGregor to hang up the gloves, he recently targeted an eventual return to the Octagon in his first post-fight remarks.
But a UFC legend believes Holloway wasted an opportunity to call for a big fight at UFC 329.
Chael Sonnen to Max Holloway: ‘You want to fight the hurt guy?’
In a recent video uploaded to his YouTube channel, UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen criticized Holloway for calling for a McGregor trilogy after UFC 329.
“Are you kidding me? You want to fight the hurt guy? Fight the injured guy?” Sonnen said of Holloway.
“You want to fight the guy who just gave you an effort, and it was 40 seconds, and you got the biggest check of your year? Of your career? You sure you want to call out that guy because there’s a morgue up the road?”
“Maybe we should go down there or maybe we should go to the other end of the unit, and you should just call out newborn babies.” (h/t Bloody Elbow)
As of this writing, Holloway hasn’t responded to Sonnen’s harsh criticism.
The former BMF titleholder remains a top contender in the lightweight division despite a recent loss to Charles Oliveira. As McGregor begins a lengthy recovery, Holloway could face the likes of Paddy Pimblett and Oliveira for his future fights.
