The Twins announced that top outfield prospect Emmanuel Rodriguez has been called up from Triple-A St. Paul.  Infielder Ben Ross was optioned to Triple-A in the corresponding move, and Rodriguez is already on Minnesota’s 40-man roster.

Rodriguez figures to make his big league debut in today’s game with the Guardians, and it is fair to assume the 23-year-old would’ve been in the Show earlier this year if it wasn’t for a left thumb UCL surgery back in May.  The injury cost Rodriguez close to three full months of action, but he has been on fire since returning to St. Paul’s lineup after a rehab assignment in the lower minors.  For the season as a whole, Rodriguez has hit .272/.422/.490 with 11 homers over 258 plate appearances over three minor league levels, with 220 of those PA coming against Triple-A pitching.

The outfielder received a $2.5MM bonus from the Twins as an international signing in July 2019.  Rodriguez was a consensus top-100 prospect heading into the season and Baseball America still had him 44th in their August update to their top 100 ranking.  MLB Pipeline no longer has Rodriguez within their top 100, however, putting him fifth just among Twins prospects (BA has Rodriguez fourth on their Minnesota farm ranking).  It could be that Rodriguez’s thumb surgery weighs heavier than his production, as a long list of injuries has limited him to only 353 minor league games played since his pro career began in 2021.

As MLBTR’s Darragh McDonald noted in May, this checkered injury history has already limited the Twins’ amount of team control over Rodriguez, even though the outfielder has yet to appear in the majors.  Rodriguez has been on Minnesota’s 40-man roster since November 2023, so two of his minor league options have already been burned.  The Twins may well petition the league to try and obtain a fourth option year for Rodriguez due to his injury history, but if that can’t be obtained, Rodriguez will be out of options heading into 2027.

It makes for a bit of a tricky roster situation going forward, and thus Rodriguez’s first stint in the big leagues could be as much of an audition for other teams as it is a chance to show the Twins what he can do against MLB pitching.  He’ll retain his rookie eligibility for 2027 given the lack of time remaining in this season, and his eligibility for the Prospect Promotion Incentive will remain intact if Rodriguez is on two of the three top 100 prospect lists from MLB Pipeline, Baseball America and ESPN next spring.

Beyond his health issues, strikeouts have been the biggest on-field problem for Rodriguez, though his 26.5% strikeout rate in the minors this year represents a bit of an improvement.  Over 462 PA at the Triple-A level of the last three seasons, Rodriguez has hit .257/.420/.455 with 18 homers, so his impressive on-base skills somewhat offset the strikeouts even if there’s some “three true outcomes” feeling here.  Evalutors praise Rodriguez’s ability to make hard contact, as well as his speed and throwing arm.  Rodriguez is seen as a candidate for corner outfield work, though he can play center field passably well.

Rodriguez joins Walker Jenkins and Kaelen Culpepper as top-tier Minnesota prospects who have gotten their first taste of MLB play within the last six weeks.  The Twins figure to give Rodriguez some at-bats at DH or in right field, with the youngsters likely getting priority over an impending free agent like regular DH Josh Bell.
