Undefeated UFC welterweight contender Shavkat Rakhmonov is eyeing a matchup with one of the division’s rising stars.

It’s been almost two full years since undefeated welterweight star Shavkat Rakhmonov defeated former title challenger Ian Machado Garry at UFC 310. Rakhmonov, the top welterweight contender for months, has been sidelined with injuries and other ailments during his long hiatus from competition.

Before his recent injuries, it was seen as almost a foregone conclusion that Rakhmonov would fight for the welterweight title for his next fight. But after months away from the cage, Rakhmonov will likely have to win at least one fight before making the case for a title fight.

Luckily, Rakhmonov has an idea in mind for who he’d like to fight in his return to the Octagon as he resumes full-time training.

Shavkat Rakhmonov eyes Michael Morales fight for return from two-year absence

Rakhmonov hinted at a fight with undefeated welterweight contender Michael Morales in recent training footage.

“19-0 vs. 19-0,” Rakhmonov posted on his TikTok in reference to Morales’ record.

Rakhmonov’s comments came after Morales posted a recent video hinting at Rakhmonov being the ‘final boss’ of his UFC title pursuits. Morales hasn’t fought since knocking out Sean Brady at UFC 322 last year.

Morales has earned knockout wins over Gilbert Burns, Neil Magny, and Trevin Giles during his UFC tenure. The Dana White’s Contender Series standout is regarded as one of the most physically imposing welterweights in the sport.

As of this writing, the UFC hasn’t announced anything for Morales’ next fight, making the Rakhmonov fight all the more enticing. UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev is expected to fight Carlos Prates in his next title defense in 2027.

The Rakhmonov vs. Morales winner would likely be the next welterweight title contender, although it remains to be seen when Rakhmonov will be medically cleared to fight.
