Russell Westbrook’s NBA future has become increasingly uncertain, with the former MVP reportedly generating little interest on the free-agent market as training camp approaches.

According to NBA insider Evan Sidery, Westbrook is receiving “not much, if any, interest” in free agency. Sidery added that there is now a realistic possibility the nine-time All-Star could begin the 2026-27 season unsigned, potentially bringing an end to a Hall of Fame career that has spanned 18 seasons.

The report marks a dramatic shift for one of the most accomplished guards of his generation. Westbrook has played for seven teams over the last nine years, suiting up for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings.

Despite his uncertain market, Westbrook remained a productive contributor last season. Playing for Sacramento, the 37-year-old appeared in 64 games, making 58 starts while averaging 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists in 29.0 minutes per game. He shot 42.7% from the field and a respectable 33.8% from three-point range, his highest three-point percentage since the 2022-23 season.

Across his 18-year NBA career, Westbrook has averaged 20.9 points, 8.0 assists and 6.9 rebounds over 1,301 regular-season games. His résumé includes the 2016-17 NBA MVP award, nine All-Star selections, nine All-NBA Team honors and becoming the NBA’s career leader in triple-doubles.

His peak came during the 2016-17 season with Oklahoma City, when he averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists, becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double over an entire season. Westbrook would go on to average a triple-double in four different campaigns.

However, the veteran’s role has steadily evolved. Rather than serving as a franchise centerpiece, Westbrook has spent recent seasons providing secondary playmaking, rebounding and energy off the bench or as a complementary starter. He finished seventh in Sixth Man of the Year voting with Denver in 2024-25 before returning to a starting role in Sacramento last season.

Earlier this offseason, the Miami Heat were reported as a potential destination, but only if LeBron James chose another team in free agency.
