Lowa Renegade EVo GTX Mid

The Lowa Renegade Evo GTX Mid is a dependable hiking boot designed for hikers who value support, protection, and weather resistance. It is an updated version of Lowa’s long-running Renegade line, combining a durable nubuck-leather upper with a waterproof Gore-Tex lining and a supportive sole construction. These features make the boot well suited to day hikes, backpacking trips, wet conditions, and uneven ground.

  • Gender: Men's (Women's Available)
  • Type: Mid-height
  • Weight: 2 lbs 12.6 oz (Men's 10.5US/EU44)
  • Outsole: Vibram Rene Trac
  • Wide Sizes Available: Yes

  • Toe Box Size: Normal
  • Break-in Period: Just a few hikes; figure about 10-15 miles

If there's one characteristic that stands out about the Lowa Renegade EVO GTX boots, it's their stability. The boot offers strong heel and arch support, making it a solid option for hikers who prefer a secure, structured feel. If you have any ankle, knee, or hip weakness or issues, these boots provide extra support and surefooted cushioning to give you greater confidence on rocky terrain.

The boots have a built-in support system that extends up the sides of the midsole to cradle the foot using a specialized injection-molding process that bonds the sole and upper together. This creates a supportive cage that balances underfoot stability and shock absorption without adding excessive weight.

One of the boot’s most important features is its nubuck-leather upper. Nubuck is more durable and protective than the thin synthetic fabrics used on many lightweight hiking shoes. It helps shield the feet from rocks, roots, and abrasion.

Underfoot, the boot uses a cushioned polyurethane midsole and a Vibram Rene Trac outsole. The midsole absorbs impact from hard surfaces and supports you on long walks. The Vibram outsole has a practical tread pattern that grips well on dirt, gravel, rock, and ordinary wet surfaces. This traction is important when descending slopes or walking across uneven ground. It performs reliably on general hiking terrain, although hikers facing deep mud, loose scree, or very technical routes may prefer a more aggressively lugged outsole.

The Gore-Tex lining provides waterproof protection and helps in cool weather. However, like most waterproof boots, it can make the boot warmer in hot conditions. If water enters over the collar, or if your feet sweat heavily, the boot may take time to dry.

The fit is generally secure, with lacing that holds the heel and midfoot firmly while leaving room to adjust the forefoot. Choosing the right size matters because the boot’s strong structure does not disguise a poor fit. Wearing hiking socks and leaving enough space for the toes to move is especially useful on descents, when feet can slide forward.

The Renegade Evo GTX Mid's main weakness is its weight. It is not the best choice for hikers who want a barely noticeable boot or a highly flexible stride. It also carries a relatively high price, though its construction and durability may justify the investment for frequent hikers.

Recommendation

The Lowa Renegade Evo GTX Mid is a comfortable and protective boot for people who want dependable support in changing conditions. Its leather upper, waterproof lining, stable construction, cushioning, and grippy outsole all serve a clear purpose. It is best suited to day hikes and backpacking on mixed terrain. Hikers who prioritize speed and minimal weight may prefer a lighter shoe, but those seeking stability and long-term durability will find the Renegade Evo GTX Mid a strong choice.
