The Red Sox announced that first baseman Willson Contreras has been activated from the 10-day injured list. Infielder Anthony Seigler has been placed on the 10-day IL in the corresponding move, as Seigler is dealing with inflammation in his right wrist.
A left hamstring strain sent Contreras to the IL on August 31, but his relatively quick return indicates that the slugger should be ready to go for the stretch run and into the playoffs. Contreras has been a huge reason why the Sox are headed to October, as the first baseman has hit .274/.384/.516 with a team-leading 26 homers in 517 plate appearances. Acquired from the Cardinals last December, Contreras’s first season in Boston has seen him post a 150 wRC+ — a number topped by only Yordan Alvarez and Pete Crow-Armstrong among all qualified hitters.
Seigler also arrived in Boston after another notable offseason deal, as Seigler came from the Brewers along with Caleb Durbin, Andruw Monasterio, and a Competitive Balance Round-B draft pick in exchange for Kyle Harrison, Shane Drohan, and David Hamilton. Knee problems sent Seigler to the IL for a brief stretch at the start of the year and the Red Sox have shuttled the infielder back and forth from Triple-A, but he has been pretty effective when he has played, hitting .247/.327/.400 in 173 PA (translating to a 102 wRC+).
Seigler’s latest recall from Triple-A was only on Friday, but Saturday’s game saw him make an early exit due to wrist discomfort. He was in obvious pain after fouling off a pitch in the sixth inning, and while Seigler finished the at-bat, Isiah Kiner-Falefa took over at second base in the top of the seventh.
