Raoni Barcelos has commented for the first time since his scary knockout loss at UFC Vegas 121.
Things were looking good for Barcelos going into the final round of his clash with Raul Rosas Jr. this past Saturday. Barcelos was up on all three judges’ scorecards, but disaster struck, and fans feared the worst. Rosas scored what looked to be a routine takedown, but Barcelos was unconscious and had to be stretchered out of the Meta Apex.
Positive updates from UFC and Barcelos’ coach calmed a lot of the concern, and now the 28-fight veteran has delivered his first message since the fight. In the comment section of a post on the UFC Brasil Instagram page, Barcelos appeared to be in good spirits.
“Hey, guys, I want to let you all know that I’m doing great and as soon as I can I will send you all a video!” Barcelos wrote. “Thank you so much for everyone’s love and prayers! I promised a great fight and I fulfilled what I promised. Thank you God and everyone who fought together with me inside and out of that cage.”
A popular belief is that Rosas’ head unintentionally made contact with Barcelos’ chin, which led to the finish. Some are even calling for the bout result to be changed to a no contest, but there’s no word on whether or not a potential reversal will be explored.
Barcelos was on a five-fight winning streak before the unfortunate end to his bout with Rosas this past weekend. How soon the 39-year-old can return to the Octagon remains to be seen, but for now, fans can rest easier knowing that UFC Vegas 121 did not end in tragedy.
Do you think a rematch between Raoni Barcelos and Raul Rosas should take place if Barcelos is able to return to full health? Sound off in the comments below.
