A few viewers might have noticed a stat from Sky Sports during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Ipswich Town last night as it’s either completely inaccurate or heavily misleading.

Alexander Isak scored two early goals for the Reds as they beat Ipswich, and they certainly have a very strong record when it comes to going two goals up away from home.

However, it’s not quite as good as this little stat graphic below suggests…

The claim being made is that Liverpool have won all 22 of the games when they’ve gone 2-0 up away from home – a run stretching back to December 2016.

However, two games immediately come to mind that disprove the claim, as Liverpool were 2-0 up away to Chelsea in a game at Stamford Bridge in 2022, only to draw 2-2. And just last season, LFC were 2-0 up away to Leeds United in a game which finished 3-3.

It’s possible that this stat was supposed to mean games where Liverpool were 2-0 up at half time, in which case neither of those examples would count. Liverpool went 2-0 up early at Stamford Bridge but Chelsea had already levelled the game by half time. Against Leeds last season, Liverpool were 1-0 up at half time and scored their second early in the second half.

Still, the graphic above doesn’t seem to make that specification, so even if it’s a very impressive run, it’s not quite what it makes itself out to be!

Liverpool pick up first win under Andoni Iraola

More importantly for Liverpool, they picked up their first competitive win under new manager Andoni Iraola last night.

The Merseyside giants drew 2-2 away to Newcastle and 2-2 at home to Nottingham Forest in their first two games of the new campaign.

They looked more solid last night, and they’ll also be delighted to see Alexander Isak’s form improving so much after a difficult first season for the club last term.

There’s still room for improvement, of course, and there’ll be tougher opponents than this to come.

But there are now some encouraging signs for Liverpool under Iraola, who impressed hugely at former club Bournemouth before being brought in to replace Arne Slot.
