Just when it looked like the MLB trade deadline was over, the San Diego Padres and Detroit Tigers agreed to a buzzer-beater trade that may greatly benefit the Padres' rotation for the remainder of this season.

Casey Mize is headed out west

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the two sides agreed on a trade to send right-hander Casey Mize from the Tigers to the Padres.

Mize was expected to be moved ahead of the deadline, and it took right until the last minute for a deal to be agreed upon.

Along with Mize, San Diego also acquired utilityman Gage Workman in the deal. In return, Detroit received Kash Mayfield (SD No. 2 prospect) and left-handed pitching prospect Jackson Wolf.

Casey Mize is having a stellar season

Through 16 starts, Mize has pitched to a 2.70 ERA with 85 strikeouts across 86.2 innings. Injuries are a bit of a concern, but when available, Mize has been one of the best pitchers in the league.

Did San Diego do enough to be competitive?

Mize was one of two starters acquired by San Diego on Monday, joining left-hander Robbie Ray.

The Padres entered Monday just one game out of the third NL wild-card spot, so they will need Mize and Ray to continue their stellar work if they hope to surpass teams ahead of them and avoid missing the postseason for the second time in four seasons.
