Oscar De La Hoya labeled Canelo Alvarez a sellout for scheduling his ring return on Halloween in Saudi Arabia rather than sticking to a traditional Mexican holiday weekend. There is, however, an unintentional silver lining for Canelo: if Christian Mbilli pulls off an upset, the Mexican national celebration stays intact.

“He’s a sellout. I mean, how you have the biggest Mexican fighter on the planet fighting on Halloween? You should be fighting in September. You should be fighting on your Mexican holidays,” De La Hoya told The Ariel Helwani Show.

De La Hoya contends that the twilight of Canelo’s career belongs to his Mexican supporters. The Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day dates built his bouts into cultural spectacles, elevating them above whatever opponent stood across the ring.

Under his current Riyadh Season contract, Saudi financial backing dictates the calendar. De La Hoya views the shift as turning a cold shoulder to the domestic fanbase that engineered Canelo’s stardom. While the Golden Boy boss carries obvious personal baggage regarding his former fighter, the altered schedule presents visible evidence of that priority shift.

Giving up the holiday marquee might spare Canelo deeper humiliation. Suffering a defeat on October 31 would deliver a major blow to his standing. Suffering that same defeat while headlining Mexican Independence Day weekend would permanently attach his athletic decline to a national celebration. That does not mean he sought the late October date as armor, but the timing softens the public sting if the night goes wrong.

His standing needs restoration regardless. Canelo heads into this bout coming off a loss and roughly thirteen months on the shelf. Mbilli delivers heavy pressure alongside massive punch output, attributes capable of testing any erosion in Canelo’s stamina or timing.

Had Canelo spent recent years running a gauntlet against dangerous contenders like Osleys Iglesias, Lester Martinez, Hamzah Sheeraz, or Carlos Adames, his record might carry more blemishes. You cannot tally hypothetical bouts as official defeats, yet those avoided tests undermine the claim of absolute dominance.

De La Hoya remains furious that Canelo traded cultural heritage for Saudi checks. Facing a relentless threat like Mbilli, Canelo could realize that fighting on Halloween guarantees one relief: a disaster in the ring will not ruin Mexico’s holiday.
