Forest will be eager to avoid a repeat of the 2025-26 campaign, as they spent the majority of the season embroiled in a relegation battle, and Vitor Pereira has now underlined the importance of moving swiftly in the transfer market.
Pereira said: “I believe we have a good squad and have good players. We need to keep most of them and just add competition here and there in this position and that position. Let’s prepare ourselves to be ready from the beginning. If not, you start losing before you start the season.”
Although the Tricky Trees improved from an attacking point of view as the season wore on, picking up a crucial 5-0 win at Sunderland and 3-1 victory against Chelsea, goals were a problem at times.
As a result, it may be important for Pereira to improve his forward options in his first summer transfer window in charge of Forest, and a Bundesliga star has now been identified as a target.
Nottingham Forest enter race to sign Bundesliga playmaker
According to a report from On The Minute, Nottingham Forest are now rivalling Coventry City for the signature of Union Berlin forward Andrej Ilic, with his contract set to expire at the end of next season.
Forest are closely monitoring Ilic's situation, with the striker yet to put pen to paper on a new deal, which is causing panic for the German side, given that he was one of their most important players throughout the 2025-26 season.
Although primarily a centre-forward, the Serbian displayed a remarkable ability to create chances for his teammates, registering 12 assists in 34 matches in all competitions, while also managing to get on the scoresheet on six occasions.
Former Union Berlin manager Steffen Baumgart, who was sacked in April, was also very impressed by the playmaker's work off the ball, saying back in October: "I think he is the most important striker we have in the team, regardless of the fact that he has not scored a goal this season.
"The way he works for the team, the way he presses and plays the press is fantastic. He has to be an example for everyone, because the things he does are not reflected in the statistics."
As such, there are plenty of signs Ilic may still have a lot to offer Nottingham Forest, despite not being the most prolific of strikers.
