Newcastle United's search for a midfielder is likely to become a saga which stretches right up until deadline day.

The Magpies look likely to lose Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal in the coming weeks, which follows Sandro Tonali's big-money move to Tottenham Hotspur. Eddie Howe has been forced to watch on and potentially plan for life without two of his biggest stars.

Arrivals such as Aladji Bamba will help, but getting one more name over the line in the form of Danilo should still be the priority at St James' Park.

Newcastle's new-look midfield

Aladji Bamba

Newcastle kept things quiet in pursuit of Bamba and no one will blame them after a year of last-ditch hijacks from other clubs. The AS Monaco man will be an excellent addition, especially out of possession. The new signing won 9.1 duels per game in Ligue 1 last season - more than any other midfielder.

Joelinton

He may be looking around and wondering just what happened to the robust midfield that Newcastle boasted, but Joelinton still has a job to do. Alongside a new pairing, the Brazilian will be more important than ever for Howe, as the Magpies adapt to life without Sandro Tonali and Guimaraes.

Danilo

Joelinton's compatriot could certainly help in that department. While Newcastle are yet to agree a deal to sign Danilo, reports suggest that he could be on his way back to the Premier League to form an excellent, defensive partnership with Bamba at St James' Park. The Brazilian also has an eye for goal, having scored seven for Botafogo this year.

Danilo is someone who already has Premier League experience under his belt and is now hoping for a return to English football. Newcastle can hand him exactly that.

As reported by UOL in Brazil and relayed by Sport Witness, Danilo's agent is now pushing him to join Newcastle and have earmarked the Magpies as a clear preference. The Tyneside club now lead the race for his signature and talks are already underway.

It's a major boost for Newcastle, but as they know more than most, the deal is far from sealed. They must now turn their contact into an offer for the former Nottingham Forest man, whose priority is a return to the Premier League.

As far as replacing Guimaraes goes, it's clear that Danilo certainly has the attributes. Valued at just £17m due to a release clause, the Brazilian has an eye for goal just like the Newcastle man and has no problem working tirelessly out of possession.

Whilst rumours continue to surround the Magpies' midfield, the Botafogo man is the player they should prioritise. He wants a Premier League return, his agents prefer a move to Tyneside and he is capable of replacing Guimaraes. Danilo ticks every box.
