Newcastle United have now opened talks to sign Atalanta star Giorgio Scalvini, who is also being targeted by Chelsea.

Newcastle are well-stocked in the centre-back department, but Fabian Schar could now be in the latter stages of his career at 34-years-old, exacerbating the need to bring in a new defender.

The Magpies are in pole position to sign Scalvini as a potential long-term replacement for the Swiss centre-back, but a deal could be relatively costly, as he has been valued at £38m.

However, a fee in that region could be worth paying, as the Italian has received rave reviews from scout Jacek Kulig, who said in February: "Really happy to see Giorgio Scalvini back in top form. A world-class talent a few years ago, heavily interrupted by injuries, but still an outstanding player - elite both on and off the ball.

"If he stays healthy, the sky’s the limit for the 22-year-old Atalanta centre-back."

The 22-year-old made 24 appearances in the Serie A last season, scoring three goals, while he also averaged 2.1 interceptions per 90, which was the highest number in the Atalanta squad.

As such, it is no wonder some big clubs are queuing up to secure the Atalanta star's signature, with Chelsea also keen, and there has now been a fresh update on Newcastle's pursuit.

Journalist Pete O'Rourke has revealed Newcastle have now made contact regarding a deal for Scalvini, who has recently switched agents.

The Magpies may be looking to thwart the growing interest from elsewhere, with Tottenham Hotspur also working on agreeing personal terms.

Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio backs up claims that Newcastle are ramping up their pursuit, while also revealing they have been in direct contact with the eight-cap Italy international.

Aside from strengthening in the middle of defence, the Tynesiders also want to sign a new full-back this summer, with the PIF keen to bring in a player capable of being deployed on the left or the right.

Newcastle may also need to improve their midfield, with Bruno Guimaraes' future up in the air, and they could be set to make a new bid for Tottenham Hotspur's Lucas Bergvall.
