The NBA's investigation into whether the Los Angeles Clippers circumvented the salary cap in order to sign Kawhi Leonard could extend into 2027, sources told ESPN.

Sources add that the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) also would also take the matter into arbitration if the NBA were to levy penalties without sufficient evidence.

Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this month that he wanted the investigation to get wrapped up before the start of next season.

Should the NBA present indisputable evidence of wrongdoing, there could be a process to avoid arbitration with all sides agreeing to the findings and potential penalties.

It is unclear what type of penalties the Clippers and Leonard could face outside of punishment over salary cap circumvention.

The Raptors and Clippers still intend to complete their trade involving Leonard, though it is not known how the arbitration process could impact the deal.
