Welcome to the Minor League Update. Every day, we tell you the latest about what happened to the prospects you care about, and maybe a few more you should. Here’s who made waves yesterday:
Hitter of the day
Ronald Hernandez, 1B, New York Mets (High-A Brooklyn): 5-5, 3 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI, SB.
A former Marlins prospect who came to the organization via the 2023 David Robertson deal, Hernandez hasn’t been able to conquer High-A. In this, his third season in the Sally League, he’s slashing a career low .208/.339/.338 in 105 games. His career day at the plate Thursday was nice, but Hernandez will need to make strides at the plate soon if he’s going to continue his climb up the ladder.
Pitcher of the Day
Drew Beam, RHP, Kansas City Royals (Double-A Northwest Arkansas): 8 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K.
We noted in the Royals list this winter that Beam’s stuff might take a step backwards against upper-minors hitters, and that is exactly what happened this summer. The Texas League hit nearly .300 against him and the strikeout rate took a significant dip over the course of his 123 innings. His nine punchouts Thursday evening were a career best, and a positive end to what has otherwise been a lackluster season.
