Michael Jordan's game-worn and autographed jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals has sold privately for $14 million, Hunt Auctions announced Monday. The Pennsylvania-based auction house called it the highest price ever paid for basketball memorabilia.

The buyer is Miami real estate investor Ron Firman. Jordan wore the red road jersey in Game 2 on June 5, 1998, when the Chicago Bulls beat the Utah Jazz to even the series.

"While Michael Jordan's importance within the sports memorabilia marketplace has long been established it has now escalated to an elite asset class more typically reserved for iconic works of art," said Hunt Auctions president David Hunt. "We are very pleased to have been able to facilitate this historic sale which serves as another benchmark for our industry."

Chicago won the series in six games, giving Jordan his sixth and final NBA title. The 1997-98 season was chronicled in the 2020 documentary series "The Last Dance."

The sale ranks as the second-highest known price for a game-worn jersey. Babe Ruth's "called shot" jersey from the 1932 World Series sold for $24.12 million in 2024.

At least three Jordan jerseys from the 1998 Finals have now topped $10 million. A Game 1 jersey sold for about $10.1 million in 2022, and a Game 3 jersey brought about $12.3 million last month.

"Michael Jordan was an incredibly talented player who is admired around the world," said Firman. "I'm very excited about the purchase."

A private collector bought the jersey from the Bulls in 2003. It had changed hands only once since then.

Interest in items from Jordan's final Bulls season remains strong. The Air Jordan sneakers he wore in the same Game 2 sold at Sotheby's for $2.2 million in 2023, a record for sneakers at the time.
