The Mets sent right-hander Xzavion Curry outright to the club’s Florida Complex League affiliate ahead of Friday’s game against the Nationals. Curry was designated for assignment on Wednesday after the team claimed lefty Philip Abner off waivers from the Giants.

Curry opened the season in the Mexican League. He signed a minor league deal with the Mets in May. The veteran has been on and off the big-league roster several times throughout the summer. His most recent stint was a brief one. Curry spent a day in the majors and was torched in his lone appearance. The Orioles hammered him for six earned runs over three innings, including four homers.

The 28-year-old Curry posted a 5.48 ERA in his nine games with the Mets. He’ll head to free agency this winter looking for another big-league opportunity. Curry has pitched in parts of six seasons with the Guardians, Marlins, and Mets. He hasn’t had overwhelming success, but he’s been a useful innings eater often called upon to spell tired bullpens.

The Mets could look to bring Curry back as an experienced depth piece behind what’s shaping up to be a youthful rotation. Nolan McLean, Christian Scott, Zac Thornton, and Jonah Tong seem to be heading toward 2027 rotation spots. Veteran Sean Manaea will round out the group. Kodai Senga, who has been the team’s closer recently, could also factor into the rotation plans.
