The Marlins activated second baseman Xavier Edwards from the 10-day injured list today. Edwards will take the roster spot vacated by outfielder Owen Caissie, who heads to the 10-day IL with a lumbar stress reaction. Miami manager Clayton McCullough told El Extrabase’s Daniel Alvarez-Montes and other reporters that Caissie’s season is “likely done.”
Edwards suffered a left thumb sprain when Nationals infielder Jorbit Vivas slid headfirst into the second baseman’s left arm during a steal attempt on August 30, in Miami’s 6-2 win over Washington. The injury sent Edwards to the IL the next day, but the sprain was minor enough that Edwards missed just two weeks’ time.
Though Edwards’ production had slowed down quite a bit after his spectacular start to 2026, his return will help the Marlins make a bid for a winning record, even if a playoff berth is probably out of the question. Miami went 4-8 during Edwards’ absence, and the 73-76 Fish are six games out of the last NL wild card slot.
Just as Edwards returns, however, the Marlins have now lost another regular in Caissie, who made an early exit from yesterday’s game. A subsequent CT scan revealed a stress fracture, which explains the lingering back and leg pain Caissie told reporters (including the Miami Herald’s Jordan McPherson) he has been feeling over the last few days.
Caissie made his MLB debut by playing 12 games with the Cubs in 2025, and Chicago dealt the former top prospect as the headliner of the three-player package sent to Miami for Edward Cabrera in January. Caissie stepped right into the lineup as the Marlins’ right fielder on pretty much an everyday basis, apart from a few weeks spent on the IL in July when Caissie was recovering from a calf strain.
Assuming this is indeed it for Caissie’s year, he’ll finish his first full big league season with 14 homers and a .220/.288/.412 slash line in 330 plate appearances. Caissie struck out in 123 of those 330 PA and struggled defensively in right field. The calf strain cut off Caissie’s hottest streak of the year and he never regained much momentum after returning to action, and the end result was a sub-replacement level -0.5 fWAR over his 108 games in 2026.
