The Dallas Mavericks’ front-office dynamics have returned to the spotlight after comments from Mark Cuban about internal decision-making and the handling of major roster moves including the Luka Doncic trade.

Speaking on “House of Haymaker,” Cuban addressed the controversial trade discussions and described tension in the organization’s communication structure. He said, vis HoopsHype, “you could just tell that Nico just sh–t on Luka because some of the stuff that Patrick was telling me was not true.”

Cuban also credited internal resistance during the process, adding, “Yeah. And kudos to [Michael Finley] for really trying to stand up and block it.”

He detailed his interactions with team leadership and reporting systems, stating, “me going to Patrick [Dumont]: ‘Okay, Patrick, what’s going on?’ He’s going to give you a report, right? Every two weeks, you get a report, and you sit down.”

Cuban continued by explaining the communication chain inside the organization, saying, “‘Oh, yeah, I want you to talk more with Nico. Get down there with Nico.’ And then, obviously, Nico is talking trash behind the scenes.”

He framed his restraint during winning stretches as a factor in not intervening earlier, stating, “But again, we’re winning. I don’t want to create a problem when things are going well. And if we had been losing, I probably would have stepped forward and said, ‘Look, this is not working the way it is right now. Here’s what we need to do.’”

Cuban also addressed claims of internal positioning and credit for major roster decisions. He said, “‘Oh, I did the Kyrie deal. He didn’t do the Kyrie deal.’ Right. Yeah, he might have talked to the general manager, but I’m the one that made the decision.”

He further expanded on structural control within basketball operations, stating, “Nico wanted all his people in there, and you saw how many people he got rid of and who he got rid of. Masai’s a lot of the same way. But Nico didn’t really know what he was doing. I hired him to work for me, right, not to run the the the basketball operations.”

The comments arrive as Dallas enters a new leadership phase under president Masai Ujiri, who has initiated a 100-day evaluation of roster construction, coaching structure, and organizational direction following a 26–56 season.
