Liverpool are now making moves to sign Marcos Senesi, with the defender poised to leave AFC Bournemouth on a free transfer this summer.

Reds stepping up pursuit of Bournemouth star Marcos Senesi

The Reds have already strengthened their defence ahead of the summer transfer window, with Jeremy Jacquet set to complete a move to Anfield on July 1st, but they are eager to make another new addition at centre-back.

That is according to a report from Sports Boom, which reveals Richard Hughes is pushing hard behind the scenes to sign Senesi, with his Bournemouth contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The Cherries haven't given up on retaining the Argentinian, despite him rejecting three contract offers, and they are preparing a fourth proposal, having emerged as surprise contenders for the Champions League places.

However, as things stand, it is looking 'increasingly likely' the centre-back won't remain at the Vitality Stadium beyond the summer, with Liverpool and Newcastle United ready to make moves.

Senesi-Bournemouth

The Concordia-born defender has played a major role in Bournemouth's push for Europe, being lauded as "absolutely outstanding" by B/R Football's Seb Martin for the role he played in the 2-1 victory against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in April.

The three-cap Argentina international has missed just one Premier League match all season, which was due to suspension, and he has played 3,110 minutes, which is the second-highest of any outfield player in the Bournemouth squad.

As such, Senesi, who rakes in £50k-a-week, has the necessary experience to succeed at Anfield, and having only recently turned 29, he may have a number of years remaining at this level.

Liverpool's interest stems from the uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konate, with the Frenchman's contract also set to expire in the summer, and there has now been a new update on his future.

The latest on Ibrahima Konate's Liverpool future

Although Konate is yet to pen a new deal, journalist Graeme Bailey has suggested the centre-back could still remain at Anfield beyond the end of the campaign, saying: “TEAMtalk understands the primary sticking points currently centre around the structure of Konate’s signing-on package and the associated agent commissions involved in the agreement. Those discussions are ongoing and remain delicate, although both parties are still actively working towards a resolution.”

Jamie Carragher may not be too upset if the centre-back does move on, having slammed Arne Slot for the "sackable offence" of starting him against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League earlier this season.

Slot's future has been called into question throughout the campaign, and a title-winning manager now wants to replace the Dutchman.
