LeBron James is reportedly evaluating his future with the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason, and sources say the organization’s vision may matter just as much as the financial terms of any new contract offer.

According to people familiar with James’ thinking, the Lakers will need to clearly explain their long-term plan and how he fits into it if they hope to convince him to return for another season.

“The Lakers can’t just offer James a number. They have to offer a why behind that number,” an agent with prior clients on L.A.’s roster told ESPN. “Their plan for any discount would have to be coherent.”

Sources close to James say there have been moments this season where he felt underappreciated by the franchise, particularly after the Lakers acquired Luka Doncic.

One source even claimed the organization appeared to be trying to “push him out the door” following the blockbuster trade.

Despite the reported frustration, those around James say he still enjoys living and playing in Los Angeles.

“I think it’s up to the Lakers,” a source who attended Game 4 against Oklahoma City told ESPN. “He loves it in L.A.”
