The Philadelphia 76ers have embraced an all-in approach this offseason, and former NBA guard Jeff Teague believes that leaves the franchise with only one acceptable outcome: an NBA championship.

Speaking about Philadelphia’s new-look roster, Teague argued that anything short of a title would constitute a failure, largely because of LeBron James’ decision to join the franchise.

“Because he left LA. He handpicked where he wanted to go. He mapped out the team. He said, ‘This is the best team I can get to win a championship.’ So, he ain’t say, ‘Oh, this the best team I can build something here and we can have a good time.’ He said, ‘I picked them because we gonna win a chip.'”

Jeff Teague says the only thing the Sixers can do is win a championship, if they don’t it’s a bust:

Teague’s comments reflect the expectations surrounding one of the NBA’s busiest offseason teams. Philadelphia not only landed James in free agency but also reshaped its core by acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Paul George and multiple first-round picks. The moves give the Sixers a new star trio of James, Brown and former MVP Joel Embiid, with Tyrese Maxey remaining the franchise’s primary backcourt cornerstone.

The pressure is understandable given how Philadelphia’s 2025-26 campaign ended. The Sixers finished 45-37, seventh in the Eastern Conference, before defeating the Boston Celtics in a seven-game first-round series. Their postseason run ended abruptly in the conference semifinals, where the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks completed a four-game sweep.

Even with injuries limiting Embiid and George for much of last season, Philadelphia still received elite production from Maxey. The 25-year-old averaged 28.3 points and 6.6 assists while shooting 46.2% from the field across 70 games, earning an All-Star selection and All-NBA Third Team honors. Embiid appeared in only 38 games but still produced 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest.

Brown now replaces George after another productive season in Boston, while James arrives after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency. Philadelphia also strengthened its supporting cast by signing Anfernee Simons, Dean Wade and Ariel Hukporti, drafting Labaron Philon Jr. with the 22nd overall pick, and adding Rayan Rupert and Caleb Love on two-way contracts.

Those additions came at the expense of several rotation players. Kelly Oubre Jr. signed with the Indiana Pacers, Quentin Grimes joined the Los Angeles Lakers, Andre Drummond departed in free agency, and Trendon Watford became an unrestricted free agent after the Sixers declined his team option.

The organization has made its intentions unmistakable. Trading future draft capital for Brown while adding James to a roster already built around Embiid and Maxey signals a championship-or-bust timeline. Questions remain about Embiid’s durability and how quickly the roster can develop chemistry, but Philadelphia has assembled one of the league’s most accomplished collections of talent.
