Jalen Duren is increasingly prepared to play out the coming season on his $9.6 million qualifying offer rather than sign a long-term contract with the Detroit Pistons, according to a source briefed on the situation. The approach would set up Duren to become an unrestricted free agent next summer if no extension is reached with Detroit by the end of September.

Durent's restricted free agency standoff with the Pistons remains one of the most significant pieces of unresolved roster business across the league. Duren and the Pistons are reportedly $5 million per year apart in their negotiations.

Duren is seeking a lucrative five-year contract reflecting his emergence as an All-Star and All-NBA player last season, but no team in the league currently holds the salary cap space needed to make a competing offer, limiting pressure on Detroit to raise its proposal. Duren's only real leverage is the threat of the qualifying offer. The Sacramento Kings showed interest at the start of free agency and could pursue him if he were to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

Choosing to play on the qualifying offer would carry considerable risk for Duren and also put him in a hole financially where he would play for approximately $25 million less in the coming season. Skepticism remains about whether he would ultimately follow through on that approach unless it actually occurs.
