Fresh off their memorable run to the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, New Zealand’s cricket selectors are already pivoting toward the 50-over format. With an eye firmly fixed on building depth for next year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, New Zealand Cricket have unveiled an exciting 16-player squad for their upcoming five-match ODI series against the West Indies. Striking a distinct balance between battle-tested leadership and fresh-faced ambition, the roster signals a tactical shift as the Black Caps manage player workloads and test their bench strength in challenging Caribbean conditions.

New Zealand recalls Jacob Duffy in 16-player ODI squad for West Indies tour

The headline of the squad announcement is the international return of experienced right-arm seamer Jacob Duffy. Duffy, who last featured on the global stage during the T20 World Cup earlier this year, was granted a well-deserved break from the game following the birth of his first child. His comeback adds vital experience to a bowling unit missing several regular spearheads.

Veteran all-rounder Mitchell Santner will captain the side throughout the tour. Santner, who recently expressed immense pride in New Zealand’s runner-up finish at the T20 World Cup, will lead a transitional but highly capable group. The squad features a mix of established names like Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, and Michael Bracewell, alongside emerging talents ready to lock down permanent spots.

Workload management and injuries have drastically altered the Black Caps’ usual bowling blueprint. Quick pins Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, and Will O’Rourke are being rested to manage their physical output, while Blair Tickner remains sidelined following ankle surgery. Furthermore, star batter Devon Conway is unavailable due to family reasons, and young phenom Rachin Ravindra has been granted a leave of absence to participate in Major League Cricket (MLC).

Strategic debut potential and looking ahead to the World Cup

The vacuum left by resting veterans opens a massive door for domestic standout Matthew Fisher, who earns his maiden ODI call-up and could make his international debut in Guyana. New Zealand coach Rob Walter expressed immense enthusiasm about integrating Fisher and welcoming back Duffy into the team dynamic, noting that the series serves as a critical evaluation period ahead of next year’s 50-over World Cup.

It’s great to have Jacob and Matt joining the group, and I know they’ll bring a lot of energy and excitement. It’s a nice opportunity to introduce Matt to the ODI group for the first time. He bowls with good pace and has been working hard on his variations. Jacob has been a stand-out for us across formats; his skills and experience will be a great addition,” Walter stated.

The action kicks off on July 11 at the Guyana National Stadium, which will host the first three encounters before the series shifts to the iconic Kensington Oval in Barbados for the final two matches.
