Nottingham Forest are now racing to sign Davide Frattesi from Inter Milan this summer, having seen a €35m (£30m) offer rejected by the Italian giants in January.
Nottingham Forest racing to sign Frattesi
With Premier League survival all but secured, barring an absolute disaster, Nottingham Forest are turning their focus towards some much-needed reinforcements.
Whilst they'll celebrate avoiding the drop, everyone at the City Ground will be well aware that this season has not been good enough after qualifying for the Europa League in the last campaign.
Evangelos Marinakis is certainly not afraid to make changes if he deems them necessary and he could finally land the midfield target that he's been desperate for this summer.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Nottingham Forest are set to battle for Frattesi's signature for the second time in the space of five months this summer.
The Tricky Trees already missed out on his arrival in January, when Inter rejected their £30m offer. Now, months later, the midfielder is reportedly desperate to leave the San Siro and Forest could even land a discount.
Despite falling down the pecking order at Inter, it's worth remembering just who Frattesi is. It was only last season that the Italian played a crucial part in his side's Champions League run - scoring the winning goal in the semi-final against Barcelona.
One year later, he's started just three Serie A games all season and needs a move more than most this summer.
The 26-year-old may be overlooked at the San Siro, but he could quickly become a key player at Nottingham Forest, as they set their sights on a swift return to the Premier League's top half next season.
Pereira rues Nottingham Forest injuries
Nottingham Forest's strange season can be summed up by their Europa League run. Despite continuing to struggle in the Premier League, those in the Midlands reached the semi-final stage in Europe before crashing out against Aston Villa on Thursday night.
Even after a 4-1 thrashing on aggregate, Vitor Pereira looked back on Forest's injuries after his side were denied a place in the Europa League final. He told reporters: "Now it is important to win the battle until the end of the season and then we can think about building something to be back in European competition.
"We have to play again after three days. We played three days ago and we’re playing again three days after this game, and there are teams not in Europe that are playing on Monday. We’ve had a lot of injuries because the players are not machines and they cannot deal with this kind of schedule.
"To compete for the final we only had three substitutes fit enough to play, and we took the risk with Murillo. He is not ready yet and it was very tough."
