Islam Makhachev has no plans to retire until he has faced some more worthy contenders at welterweight.

When longtime UFC color commentator Joe Rogan suggested that Makhachev might retire with a win over Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330, the reigning 170-pound champion immediately dismissed that idea. Makhachev will be turning 35 in October, but he hasn’t showed signs of slowing down.

While Makhachev’s face was marked up by Garry in their UFC 330 clash, the pound-for-pound king dropped the young challenger with a head kick in the second round and used his grappling to control most of the fight for the unanimous decision win. While Makhachev’s accolades speak for themselves, he still feels there’s more to do before he hangs up his gloves.

Ushatayka posted footage of Makhachev speaking to reporters in Russia. The decorated champion told media members that he plans on extending his record for the most consecutive UFC wins. In fact, Makhachev wants at least three more fights before he considers stepping away from pro MMA competition (via MMAFighting).

“Well, I wouldn’t call it unbreakable by any means,” Makhachev said. “There are fighters out there, not exactly breathing down my neck, but there are those that already have 10 wins [in a row]. I don’t know, maybe the title fights record? Though the record for title fights is quite large. I fought 10 bouts before getting the title, while the record holder fought for the title in his third or fourth fight.

“So I don’t know what records will come next, but in my weight class I have some very good title contenders. I think I have at least three more spectacular and very tough fights for me.”

Carlos Prates figures to be in heavy consideration for the next welterweight title challenger. Prates, along with top contender Michael Morales, were both in attendance to see Makhachev’s victory over Garry in Philadelphia. Morales also makes a strong case having stopped Sean Brady back in Nov. 2025.

Makhachev has made his preference clear. The 170-pound ruler wants to fight Prates next because he feels Morales has been too inactive. He’d rather see Morales win a No. 1 contender bout first, but what the UFC matchmakers ultimately decide will be a story to watch.
