New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe famously grew up a fan of the Bronx Bombers and idolized Yankees legend Derek Jeter. 

However, Jeter raised eyebrows when he said during a recent conversation with Adam Schein of SiriusXM's Mad Dog Sports Radio and the New York Post that he has only had "a couple conversations" with Volpe and hasn't gotten to know the once-promising prospect "that well." According to Grace McCarron of the New York Post, Schein later ripped Volpe following Jeter's comments. 

Derek Jeter comments the latest "red flag" regarding Anthony Volpe?

"[Volpe] has no relationship with [Jeter]? Hey Anthony, you wanna pick up the phone and call Derek Jeter? He’d return the call. He’d text you back. That’s one red flag," Schein explained.

Volpe made his big-league debut in 2023, and he ultimately earned American League Gold Glove Award honors for his rookie season. However, he has regressed since then, and it remains unclear if he will even be with the Yankees at this time next year. 

Across 517 career regular-season games, Volpe has slashed .224/.288/.375 with a .662 OPS. He tallied 53 home runs, 205 RBI and 77 stolen bases over those contests. 

Do in-the-know individuals think Anthony Volpe has a future with the Yankees? 

The Post's Steve Serby recently spoke with Yes Network broadcasters Michael Kay and Paul O’Neill about a variety of Yankees-related topics. During that conversation, Kay and O’Neill were asked if people within the Yankees still believe Volpe has a future with the organization.

"I do," Kay responded. "I don’t know if it’s at shortstop. …I don’t think they’ve given up on him by any stretch of the imagination. I hear the way [manager Aaron Boone] talks about him. Seems like he still has a lot of respect. I think everybody in the room likes him. He works really really hard. They think there’s something there."

Chris Kirschner and Brendan Kuty of The Athletic suggested that prospect George Lombard Jr. "could find himself playing shortstop in the Bronx well before the calendar turns to September and rosters expand." Such a line could lead one to believe it's not a lock that Volpe will still be with the Yankees once the Aug. 3 trade deadline arrives. 

"That’s another thing that’s gonna be kind of played out here in the second half — is Anthony Volpe gonna be the future of the Yankees, or is it gonna be another plan? That’s kind of a work in progress if you ask me," O’Neill added.
