The stakes could not have been higher at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday. In the 65th match of IPL 2026, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squared off against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) in a high-octane encounter. With their postseason aspirations hanging by a thread, KKR needed a decisive performance to stay in the tournament. What unfolded was a thrilling, low-scoring classic characterized by exceptional bowling, tactical masterclasses, and an unforgettable moment of individual brilliance in the field. Ultimately, Kolkata chased down a modest target to seal a crucial four-wicket victory with seven balls to spare.

Corbin Bosch takes a sensational catch to dismiss Rovman Powell in KKR vs MI clash

Even in a losing effort for the Mumbai Indians, South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch provided the defining visual highlight of the match. During the tense second half of KKR’s chase, Kolkata looked comfortably on course for victory, anchored by a stabilizing partnership between Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell. However, the game turned on its head during the 16th over, delivering one of the greatest defensive plays of IPL 2026.

On the second delivery of the 15.2 over, young MI spinner AM Ghazanfar bowled a shorter, wider delivery to Powell. The powerful West Indian batter capitalised on the width, unleashing a fierce, trademark cut shot aimed directly through the point region. The ball rocketed off the blade and seemed destined for the boundary ropes.

Positioned at point, Bosch had only a fraction of a second to react. Displaying superhuman reflexes, Bosch launched himself entirely to his right. Airborne and at maximum extension, he stuck out his right hand to intercept the rocketed shot. He plucked the ball cleanly out of thin air, securely maintaining possession as his body crashed heavily onto the turf.

Powell stood frozen in absolute disbelief at the edge of the crease. The on-field umpires referred the play upstairs to verify the validity of the catch. Replays confirmed that Bosch had kept his fingers underneath the leather, forcing the third umpire to uphold a clean dismissal. Powell departed after a vital, 30-ball 40, which included four fours and two massive sixes. Ghazanfar claimed the breakthrough, leaving KKR momentarily stumbling at 124/5, though Bosch’s fielding heroics stole the spotlight.

KKR keep their IPL 2026 Playoffs alive after an emphatic win over MI

Earlier in the evening, KKR’s disciplined bowling unit laid the foundation for the crucial victory. Winning the toss and opting to bowl, Kolkata restricted Mumbai Indians to a modest 147/8 in their allotted 20 overs. MI struggled to find any momentum at the top of the order as Saurabh Dubey (2/34) and Cameron Green (2/23) tore through the top four, leaving Mumbai reeling at 41/4. Hardik Pandya offered brief resistance with 26 runs, but it was an unbeaten cameo from Bosch (32 off 18 balls) that pushed MI to a respectable total.

Chasing 148 for survival, KKR faced early turbulence, losing opener Finn Allen in the very first over to Deepak Chahar. Despite Bosch returning with the ball to cause problems, picking up highly economical figures of 3/30, KKR found their saviour in veteran batsman Pandey.

Pandey played a masterful, structured innings under immense pressure. Scoring 45 off 33 balls, including seven elegant boundaries, he stabilized the innings alongside Powell. Following Powell’s dismissal to Bosch’s spectacular catch, explosive finisher Rinku Singh stepped up to calm the nerves. Rinku played a brisk, unbeaten cameo of 9 runs from just 5 deliveries, guiding KKR home safely to 148/6 in 18.5 overs.

Pandey was justly rewarded with the Player of the Match honors for his stabilizing knock. The critical four-wicket victory keeps KKR firmly in the hunt for the IPL 2026 playoff spots, leaving Mumbai to rue missed opportunities despite their brilliant moments in the field.
