The IND vs WI ODI series 2026 is set to open India’s home season, with the West Indies arriving for a three-match contest that carries plenty of significance ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The series begins on September 27 at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, before moving to Guwahati for the second ODI on September 30 and New Chandigarh for the final match on October 3. All three games are scheduled to begin at 2 pm IST.

The series will also bring two of India’s biggest ODI names, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, back into action. At the same time, Shubman Gill will continue as India’s ODI captain, while West Indies will be led by experienced wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope.

India vs West Indies Head-to-Head Record in ODIs

India and West Indies have a long history in ODI cricket, dating back several decades. Their overall numbers remain relatively close compared with some of India’s more recent ODI rivalries, although the recent bilateral record has moved significantly in India’s favour.

The two sides have played 142 ODIs, with India winning 72 and West Indies winning 64. Two matches ended in ties, while four produced no result.

India’s dominance has become particularly noticeable in bilateral ODI series in recent years. The Men in Blue have not lost a bilateral ODI series against the Men in Marron in their last 13 series, home or away, while West Indies’ last ODI series win over India came in 2006.

The most recent ODI series between the teams was in the Caribbean in 2023. India won the three-match series 2-1, with West Indies taking the second ODI before India sealed the series in the decider.

The 2026 series therefore gives West Indies another opportunity to challenge India’s recent dominance, while India will be looking to use the matches as part of their preparations for the 2027 World Cup.

Players to watch for India

Shubman Gill

India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill will be one of the central figures in the series.

Gill has already established himself as an important part of India’s ODI batting setup and will now have the additional responsibility of leading the side. The West Indies series provides him with another opportunity to combine his role as a top-order batter with the demands of captaincy.

Gill also sits at the top of the latest ICC ODI batting rankings, with a rating of 801, ahead of New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell.

Virat Kohli

The return of Virat Kohli is arguably one of the biggest talking points surrounding the series.

Kohli is back in India’s ODI squad after a two-month break, having been included alongside Rohit Sharma when the squad was announced.

His experience against West Indies is another important factor. Kohli has traditionally been a prolific ODI batter and remains among the leading names in India’s batting group.

For fans, simply seeing Kohli and Rohit together in an ODI lineup again adds considerable interest to the series.

Rohit Sharma

The former India captain remains part of the ODI squad under Gill’s leadership and brings enormous experience to a batting unit that also contains Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and KL Rahul.

Rohit’s role in the top order will be closely followed, particularly with the 2027 World Cup approaching.

Ravindra Jadeja

Another notable name is Ravindra Jadeja, who returns to India’s ODI squad after last featuring in the format against New Zealand in January 2026.

His presence gives India an experienced left-handed batter and spin-bowling option, while his fielding remains another part of his overall value to the side.

Mohammed Siraj

With Jasprit Bumrah unavailable because he is part of India’s Asian Games squad, Mohammed Siraj becomes one of the senior pace options for the West Indies ODIs.

Siraj will be joined by Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar and debutant Auqib Nabi in India’s bowling group.

Players to watch for West Indies

Shai Hope

West Indies captain Shai Hope will be central to the visitors’ campaign.

Hope is both captain and wicketkeeper and has extensive ODI experience. He has scored more than 6,300 ODI runs, including numerous centuries, and remains one of West Indies’ most dependable batters in the format.

His leadership will also be important as West Indies attempt to compete against India in unfamiliar conditions.

Keacy Carty

Keacy Carty has emerged as another important member of the West Indies batting group.

The right-hander is part of a squad that also includes John Campbell, Roston Chase, Sherfane Rutherford and Justin Greaves. Carty’s ability to build an innings could become particularly valuable against India’s bowling attack.

Jewel Andrew

One of the younger names attracting attention is Jewel Andrew.

The wicketkeeper-batter has been recalled to the ODI setup after previously featuring in the format in June 2025. His inclusion reflects West Indies’ effort to build a squad with the 2027 World Cup in mind.

At just 19, Andrew represents one of the younger players in the West Indies squad and will have the opportunity to gain experience against a strong Indian side.

Alzarri Joseph

The West Indies pace attack will be led by experienced quick Alzarri Joseph.

He will share the bowling responsibilities with Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales, Gudakesh Motie and the other all-round options in the squad. Against India’s experienced top order, Joseph’s pace and ability to generate breakthroughs will be an important part of West Indies’ plans.

West Indies eye World Cup goal

The ODI series has significance beyond the three matches themselves.

West Indies are currently 10th in the ICC ODI team rankings and will be unable to secure an automatic place in the 2027 World Cup through the existing qualification cycle. Their attention will therefore increasingly turn towards the qualification tournament and the development of their ODI combination.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has described the India series as an opportunity to assess players for important roles ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

“The series also creates a valuable platform to assess players who are stepping into important roles for this series with a long-term target of competing in the World Cup in 2027.”

That makes the series particularly relevant for emerging players such as Andrew while experienced figures like Hope, Rutherford and Joseph provide continuity.
