The first ODI between India and West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram produced a memorable moment as Justin Greaves registered his maiden ODI century. The West Indies opener showed tremendous composure against a strong Indian bowling attack, battling through physical discomfort to reach the landmark and give his side a major boost in the series opener.

Justin Greaves holds firm despite injury

Greaves’ innings was not simply about the number next to his name. The right-hander displayed remarkable determination after appearing to pick up an injury during his stay at the crease. Despite struggling physically, he continued to rotate the strike and keep the West Indies innings moving.

India’s bowlers, including the spinners, attempted to build pressure on the opener by maintaining disciplined lines. However, Greaves refused to get drawn into unnecessary risks. He relied on his defensive technique, played the ball late and consistently looked for gaps rather than attempting to overpower the bowling.

His ability to maintain a healthy scoring rate while dealing with discomfort made the knock particularly impressive. Every run became a product of patience and smart batting, with Greaves ensuring that the West Indies did not lose momentum during the crucial middle overs.

Maiden ODI century for Greaves

The defining moment arrived during the second delivery of the 36th over, with Ravindra Jadeja bowling to Greaves. The West Indies batter pushed a full delivery towards the point region and immediately set off for a quick single. The fielder failed to collect the ball cleanly, allowing Greaves to complete the run and reach his maiden ODI century.

The celebration captured the significance of the moment. Greaves removed his helmet, raised his bat and acknowledged the applause around the ground. He then received a warm hug from Amir Jangoo, while West Indies head coach Daren Sammy was also visibly delighted with the achievement. For Greaves, it was a moment of immense satisfaction after an innings that demanded both physical and mental resilience.

No sixes, but plenty of control

One of the most striking aspects of Greaves’ century was the manner in which he constructed it. The opener did not rely on towering sixes to reach three figures. Instead, he built his innings through controlled strokeplay, sharp running between the wickets and well-timed boundaries.

At one stage, Greaves had accelerated with four boundaries in an over, giving the West Indies innings a much-needed push. Yet even during his attacking phase, he maintained control and avoided reckless shots.

His century ultimately became a showcase of traditional ODI batting: absorbing pressure, finding gaps and capitalising when opportunities appeared.
