Ian Machado Garry has taken some flak for what is perceived to be a lack of killer instinct.

Garry was Islam Makhahcev’s first welterweight challenger in the UFC 330 main event in Philadelphia. While “The Future” was predicting a definitive knockout, he was the one who ended up being dropped in the second round momentarily. Garry did survive and even won the third round, but Makhachev’s grappling lead to a record-breaking 17th consecutive win via unanimous decision.

UFC CEO Dana White has never been a fan of fighters getting too chummy with their opponent during bouts. Garry’s friendly gestures were no exception. Former UFC welterweight titleholder Belal Muhammad has also been critical of the Irish star for daping up Makhachev when he was down late on the fight.

You can now add UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping to the list of critics. In a post-UFC 330 reaction video, the current color commentator and analyst was puzzled by Garry’s decision to be overly friendly in moments where he needed some urgency (via MMAJunkie).

“The big question is what was Ian Garry doing, and why are people doing this? It’s mixed martial arts, it’s the UFC, we’re trying to knock each other out, we’re trying to do harm, break jaws, fracture orbitals, take out the knees, choke them out unconscious,” Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “You don’t need to high five at the start of every single goddamn round. You don’t need to hug, you don’t need to share respect and all that type of stuff.”

Bisping even thinks that Garry may have lost respect from his opponent and other fighters.

“Before the fight started, they were touching gloves. Ian Garry’s creating these moments. I always say when someone is trying to touch gloves before a fight starts, when you reach out and you make eye contact with your opponent at the other side of the octagon, and you’re like, ‘We’re touching gloves, right?’ They might say yeah, they might say no, they might say shut up. What the person that’s trying to initiate the glove touch, they are saying, ‘Hey, listen, take it easy on me. I know we talked a lot of sh*t leading up to this, but we’re martial artists, and let’s be respectful and take it easy on me.’ It is a sign of weakness.”

Garry has vowed to bounce back and see his “decade of dominance” through. Others, such as former two-division champion Henry Cejudo, aren’t sold. Cejudo thinks Garry failed to sell the UFC 330 headliner, and he doubts the UFC brass will want him as a champion.
