These are trying times for the Merseysiders, who should avoid the embarrassment and disaster of missing out on Champions League football, but who have also been left hot under the collar after such a dismal Premier League title defence.

Social media rumours might indicate interest in outgoing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, but FSG continue to bang the same drum, to the beat of Slot remaining in charge next year.

If that is the case, Liverpool are going to need to be unerring in the summer transfer market.

Only one year ago, Slot's name was bellowed across all four corners of Anfield, Liverpool singing for their title-winning coach, thriving in Jurgen Klopp's place.

One year on, the difference could not be more stark. Liverpool have been flat and uninspiring, with many fundamental problems laying waste to the club's lofty ambitions.

They need a reset, and curiously, have taken an interest in a snubbed England international.

Valued at £55m, Liverpool will have a tough job on their hands here, with Manchester United and Bayern Munich also keen.

Liverpool signed Milos Kerkez last summer, but he's left something to be desired this year. Moreover, Andy Robertson is about to depart when his contract expires in one month.

Why Hall can be Liverpool's new Trent

Liverpool and overlooked Three Lions stars go hand in hand. Trent Alexander-Arnold, after all, has never gelled with the international set-up, ostracised by Thomas Tuchel ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America.

Trent is one of a kind. It's a real shame he no longer plays for his boyhood club, and it's true that he has not had the most auspicious debut season in Spain with Real Madrid, but he remains a special player with elite game-changing qualities.

Hall is not cut from the same cloth, but the Newcastle left-back does now join Alexander-Arnold in sitting at home and watching England in action. Many are bewildered by the snub, with Hall proving against the likes of Barcelona in the Champions League this term that he can put show-stopping performances in on knockout occasions.

Hailed as having "all the attributes to become one of the best left-backs in the world" by teammate Kieran Trippier, Hall might be at a low ebb right now, Newcastle having suffered this season and the player himself now cut from the international roster - many would say unfairly.

But the 21-year-old has still put in a top campaign, winning 5.4 duels and completing 1.2 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He is an all-action defender, dynamic and enterprising on the ball.

He might not have Alexander-Arnold's natural-born brilliance as a creator, but then who does? Instead, Hall could grow into a leading Premier League star under Slot's wing at Liverpool, maybe not seeing eye to eye with England's head coach, but making all the difference at Anfield.

Left-back might not be a priority position heading into the summer transfer window for Liverpool, but Hall represents a unique market opportunity, and FSG would hate to lose a top target to a Premier League rival such as Man United.
