Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayChris Mannix of Sports Illustrated reported that the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans have been quietly discussed as potential relocation targets.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver acknowledged that relocation remains a possibility, even as expansion into cities like Seattle and Las Vegas is preferred. Both teams are considered small-market franchises with arena deals set to expire before the decade ends, fueling speculation about their futures.
The Grizzlies have struggled to fill seats despite strong performances from players like Ja Morant, who is averaging 20.4 points and 7.1 assists per game over seven contests this season. Jaren Jackson Jr. contributes 18.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, while Santi Aldama has recorded 11.0 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.
Memphis currently holds a 3-5 record, placing them 12th in the Western Conference, adding to concerns about market sustainability.
New Orleans, meanwhile, boasts standout scoring from Zion Williamson, who is averaging 22.8 points and 6.8 rebounds over five games. Jordan Poole adds 17.3 points per contest, and Trey Murphy III is contributing 15.4 points and six rebounds per game.
The Pelicans have a 3-5 record as well, ranking 16th in the West. Despite individual talent, attendance and long-term arena agreements remain areas of concern.
Both franchises face financial and market pressures that make them logical candidates for relocation discussion. Arena leases, ticket sales, and small-market dynamics have historically influenced the NBA’s consideration for moving teams.
League officials rarely disclose potential relocation discussions, but whispers connecting the Grizzlies and Pelicans to larger markets like Seattle or Las Vegas have circulated in recent months.
