Manchester United boss Michael Carrick believes Luke Shaw deserves a place in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.
Man Utd players thriving under Carrick
The England manager names his selection for this summer’s tournament on Friday, but the 30-year-old left-back looks an outsider to make a fifth major tournament.
Carrick has been instrumental in improving the form of several individuals at Old Trafford, with Kobbie Mainoo the biggest success story and likely to secure a spot on the plane to North America.
Asked if Shaw also deserves a call-up having opened the scoring in United’s 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest, former England international Carrick said: “I certainly think so, yeah.
“I haven’t got much sway in the matter at all, but I certainly think so.
“Again, the consistency, just what he’s capable of doing. The performance, the experience, his strengths, his attributes that he’s got.
“For me, yeah, he’s a fantastic full-back. I think between them, I think all three of them have done their chances no harm recently for sure.”
Shaw has dealt with injuries and questions over his fitness since joining United from Southampton in 2014, but he has started every Premier League match so far this season.
Dream 1st Carrick signing: Man Utd now favourites to land £50m Amad upgrade
Manchester United could be ready to land another dynamic forward for Michael Carrick this summer.
The likes of Mainoo, Shaw and Benjamin Sesko all looked like shells of themselves before Carrick's arrival, but Fabrizio Romano has revealed one player will not get the chance to revive their Old Trafford career.
Hojlund secures 'behind the scenes' agreement with Napoli
Indeed, the reporter confirmed on his Youtube channel that Rasmus Hojlund will not return to United at the end of his loan spell, with Napoli set to trigger the option in their loan deal.
United will receive €50m (£43m) counting the loan costs and permanent fee.
And while that was largely expected, Romano also revealed some 'behind the scenes' information - the striker has secured an exit clause which could see the Serie A club make a huge profit on the fee paid to United.
"Total package €50m, saving his salary, and also a small behind the scenes, Rasmus Hojlund at Napoli will have a release clause into his contract €85m (£74m) ready from summer 2027."
Napoli boss Antonio Conte has been full of praise for the Denmark striker's potential, telling the press earlier this year: "Rasmus is a player who has a lot of space for improvement, he’s only 22, but we are talking about two important players.
"We’re lucky to have them in our team because they are helping a lot, Scott (McTominay) last season and this season Scott with Rasmus."
McTominay has of course gone on to become a Ballon d'Or candidate since leaving United, and it seems Napoli have designs on securing a huge fee if Hojlund can follow a similar path of improvement.
