Donovan Mitchell’s new maximum contract extension secures the Cleveland Cavaliers’ franchise star for the long term, but it could make building a championship-caliber roster around him more difficult, according to Yahoo Sports’ Dan Devine.

The seven-time All-Star earned the lucrative extension through his performances, but Devine notes that Mitchell’s deal will account for 35 percent of the salary cap through his age-33 season.

That financial commitment could significantly limit Cleveland’s roster flexibility under the NBA’s current salary cap rules.

Devine also points out that surrounding an “at-times defensively challenged” guard with enough high-level talent will become increasingly difficult as the Cavaliers navigate the league’s restrictive salary cap system.

Mitchell has played 9 seasons for the Jazz and Cavaliers. He has averaged 25.1 points, 4.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 609 regular-season games.

He was selected to play in 6 All-Star games.
