LeBron James’ free agency remains unresolved, and a new report may explain why the process is taking longer than expected.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor, James is “slow-playing” his decision while waiting to see whether one of his preferred destinations can acquire Anthony Davis or Kyrie Irving.

James has won two of his four NBA championships alongside Davis and Irving, and the report suggests he is interested in reuniting with one of his former teammates before committing to his next team.

While the idea is intriguing, completing either trade appears difficult.

The Washington Wizards are reportedly comfortable keeping Davis as their starting center, while Irving is recovering from a torn ACL with the Dallas Mavericks, creating uncertainty about his availability and form next season.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers and Golden State Warriors are still considered the leading contenders to sign James, although his camp has remained silent throughout the unusually drawn-out free agency process.

Even at 41, James continues to perform at a high level.

During the 2025-26 season with the Los Angeles Lakers, he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists while shooting 51.5 percent from the field and 31.7 percent from three-point range.
