Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayDevin Haney may have his October opponent after talks with Liam Paro broke down over financial demands.
Jack Catterall is now in advanced negotiations to challenge Haney for the WBO welterweight title on October 3, Julius Julianis reported Friday.
Catterall presents a completely different look. The 32-year-old British southpaw moved up to 147 pounds last year after spending most of his career at light welterweight. That move paid off in May when he defeated Shakhram Giyasov in Egypt to capture the WBA Regular title.
Crossing paths at 147 revives a matchup that never materialized at 140 pounds. Catterall chased Haney repeatedly during that period, particularly while working his way back into position following his controversial loss to Josh Taylor. Their careers eventually went in different directions before a deal was reached.
Haney has been searching for his next defense after other options fell through. Catterall gives him a recognizable name, a southpaw opponent and a fighter coming off a strong performance in his first world title victory.
Accepting the October 3 date presents a major complication for Catterall.
His win over Giyasov set up a mandatory fight against primary WBA champion Rolly Romero. The sanctioning body ordered Romero to face Catterall within 180 days, giving the Briton a direct championship route without having to go through Haney.
Catterall therefore has a decision to make. He can stick with the WBA opportunity earned in May or pursue the fight he spent years chasing at 140 pounds. Facing Haney offers a shot at a bigger name and the WBO belt, but a loss could complicate his position with the WBA and potentially affect the ordered fight with Romero.
