An official announcement for Tyson Fury’s long-awaited showdown with Anthony Joshua is being held up by a dispute over the location.

To the disappointment of British fight fans, those financing the event are keen for it to take place stateside at Madison Square Garden. However, Joshua’s contract stipulates that the fight must take place in the UK, and his promoter, Eddie Hearn, has made it clear that the terms must be changed and agreed upon before any announcement can be made about the fight taking place overseas.

Fury called for a showdown with Joshua after defeating Arslanbek Makhmudov back in April and both men appeared in contrasting, dull and then dramatic warm-up fights last month, hoping to tee up their ever-illusive clash.

Whilst both men were victorious, fans were left frustrated by reports that the all-British affair would be staged across the pond.

Speaking on the Fight Your Corner podcast, Tyson’s brother Shane Fury admitted that he believes the fight should take place in the United Kingdom, but acknowledged that Netflix’s decision to target the United States must make more ‘business sense’.

“Obviously it is two British fighters and this fight has been on everyone’s tongue for 10 years or longer. So, for me, it should be at Wembley, but I am under no illusions that the boxers, even though they are getting paid and getting the lion’s share of the money, are nothing but pawns.

“These Netflix people and these business people are not in this business to blow money, it is a business thing the Netflix [involvement]. If it was to make better sense over here, it would happen over here. 

“It obviously makes more business sense for it to be abroad.”

A resolution over the location is expected in the coming weeks.
