Dana White has given his reaction amid Anthony Smith’s arrest.
TMZ was the first to report that the former UFC light heavyweight contender was taken to jail by Sarpy County police on Monday. Smith is facing felony charges, which include terroristic threats, domestic violence, and false imprisonment. Sarpy County police later issued a statement to MMAJunkie reporting that Smith forced his wife into a vehicle following an argument at a bar. “Lionheart” allegedly tried running his wife over with the vehicle several times.
Several key names within the MMA community have reacted to the news, such as Jon Jones, who defeated Smith in their UFC 235 headliner back in 2019. The latest figure to weigh in is UFC CEO Dana White. He told The Mac Life that it’s not a matter than anyone expected (via MMAJunkie).
“Well, he’s one of those guys, too, you don’t expect to see that happen. (From) personal experience, it can happen to anybody,” White said. “I don’t know enough about it. I don’t know enough of the details. I’ve been on the road this whole time, but I just hope it works out for him and his family and his kids.”
White has had his own domestic issues in the past, but it pales in comparison to the charges Smith is currently facing. The UFC boss was under scrutiny back in early 2023 after footage surfaced revealing he slapped his wife during a New Year’s Eve altercation. Ultimately, White didn’t face any substantial consequence.
Smith has served as an analyst for UFC broadcasts dating back to the promotion’s deal with FOX. He has also been featured as a desk analyst for more recent cards on Paramount+. Smith is facing up to 20 years in prison if he is convicted of all charges. At this time, the UFC brass has yet to make a decision on Smith’s broadcasting future.
