Eddie Hearn took great joy in hearing Dana White’s name get booed during the first press conference promoting Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua.
White wasn’t present during Wednesday’s kickoff presser, which was streamed live on Netflix’s social media platforms. The UFC boss told media members that his absence was due to his obligations to Tuesday’s “Contender Series,” but his name was not brought up as a promoter during Michael Buffer’s introductions.
The Zuffa Boxing head honcho was only mentioned by Turki Alalshikh, who may have not been expecting the boobirds to show up in droves.
“Big thanks to my brother, who’s suddenly not here today, Dana White,” Alalshikh said.
The mention of White’s name drew significant boos from those in attendance inside the British Airways Arc in London. The camera was quick to pan to Hearn, who couldn’t contain his smile and laughter.
“This is between you and them,” Alalshikh responded. “Not me.”
Since entering the world of boxing promotion, White has been at odds with Hearn. The two had been cordial prior to Zuffa Boxing’s official launch. White was able to sign Conor Benn, who had been with Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing for a decade. White helped promote the recent WBC welterweight title fight between Ryan Garcia and Benn.
Hearn has been adamant that White isn’t allowed to be involved in the promotion of Fury vs. Joshua per the terms of the bout. White recently said that Hearn’s “ego” was to blame for the drama surrounding the fight prior to the location announcement. Fury’s team reportedly wanted the fight to take place in the United States, but that won’t be happening. The bout will be held inside Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Dec. 11.
