Dana White has implied that Eddie Hearn is the reason there were last-minute issues in getting Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua over the line.
Fury and Joshua are set to collide on Dec. 11 in Cardiff for a long overdue heavyweight clash. Prior to the location announcement, Fury insisted that Hearn was holding up the fight. The Matchroom Boxing head honcho fired back by saying “The Gyspy King” wanted the fight to be held outside of the United Kingdom, which was not part of the deal that Joshua had signed.
Once the location was announced, Hearn said that White wouldn’t be allowed to be involved in the promotion of the fight. Mike Coppinger reported that this holdup put Fury vs. Joshua in jeopardy, but both fighters attended the first press conference for their bout and even shared a laugh during their staredown.
Don’t expect White and Hearn to be as cordial, however. Speaking to media members following Tuesday’s edition of his “Contender Series,” the Zuffa Boxing boss held Hearn responsible for the politics that caused problems in making Fury vs. Joshua official (via MMAJunkie).
“This isn’t a hesitation; this is an ego thing,” White said. “Total ego thing. It has nothing to do with any of this sh*t. And listen, boxing has taken a hit in the United States. It’s not as big as it was here 20 years ago. It has become a very British sport, and all the sh*t that you’re hearing – the crying and the b*tching and whatever the f*ck – is coming from the U.K. I’m having fun, man. This is right up my alley.”
White was not in attendance for the kickoff presser to promote Fury vs. Joshua, but he claimed it was due to his “Contender Series” commitments. Hearn’s side of the story is likely to be far different.
