The Chicago Cubs are expected to be buyers ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline. However, they could still look to move on from a major league asset in the right deal.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Cubs have discussed trading catcher Carson Kelly with teams looking to upgrade behind the plate. Passan noted that with catching prospect Owen Ayers on the cusp of reaching the majors, Kelly could be dealt to help shore up another area of need.

The Cubs have specific needs as the trade deadline approaches. Starter Jameson Taillon was designated for assignment following a disastrous pair of outings after returning from the injured list. The Cubs could also use an answer in the ninth inning as they have had a major league record 13 players notch at least one save this season.

Carson Kelly could help Chicago Cubs fill other holes in roster

Kelly has built off his breakout 2025 season with a strong showing thus far in 2026. He entered Thursday with a .260/.351/.372 batting line in his 285 plate appearances, hitting six homers and 10 doubles. Kelly has been solid defensively as well, throwing out 26.0% of would-be base stealers.

A likely rental as Kelly has a $7.5 million mutual option for 2027, he may not bring back much in the way of prospects. However, he could be an option for a team looking for a catcher while looking to move a rental reliever. Teams such as the Yankees, Rays and White Sox need help behind the plate and could be a match in a potential trade.
