Charles Barkley does not agree with the idea that LeBron James is somehow beating Father Time, arguing that strong regular-season numbers have to be evaluated alongside postseason results.

Speaking on the Bill Simmons podcast, Barkley pointed to James’ recent playoff exits while acknowledging that the 41-year-old remains productive.

“We have to be honest about LeBron. Just because you’re putting up good numbers don’t mean you’re being affective. — People say he’s defying the odds but if my memory serves me correctly, he’s gotten swept in the playoffs the last couple of years. — LeBron is playing well but to say he’s beating Father Time, they got swept the last two years in the playoffs so don’t tell me how great he’s playing,” Barkley said.

James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 60 games for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2025-26 regular season. He shot 51.5% from the field but made only 31.7% of his three-point attempts.

At 41, James remained an All-Star and extended his career totals to 1,622 regular-season games. Across 23 seasons, he has averaged 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists while shooting 50.7% from the field.

However, Barkley’s criticism centers on what happened once the Lakers reached the playoffs. Los Angeles was swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals.

James averaged 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists in those 10 playoff games while shooting 45.9% from the field and 32.7% from three-point range. He also averaged 3.8 turnovers per game.

The Lakers finished the regular season 53-29, good for fourth place in the Western Conference, before defeating the Houston Rockets 4-2 in the first round.

The result continued a recent stretch in which James has remained statistically productive while his teams have fallen short of championship contention. His 2024-25 campaign produced 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game, and he earned All-NBA Second Team honors.

James enters the 2026-27 season with a new team after leaving Los Angeles in free agency. He signed a two-year minimum contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, with a player option for the second season.
