Luis, who was recently named Big East Player of the Year at St. John’s, appeared in three preseason games for Boston. He totaled seven points, two rebounds, and two assists across 8 minutes per game in matchups against Memphis, Toronto, and Cleveland.

The 6-foot-6 wing signed a two-way contract with Boston following the February trade from Utah. The Celtics had viewed him as a developmental piece capable of contributing on both the NBA roster and the team’s G League affiliate.

Boston’s roster now focuses on a core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and newly acquired depth pieces, while maintaining flexibility under the second apron of the salary cap.

Luis’ brief tenure in Boston follows a strong senior season at St. John’s, where he averaged 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds while improving his three-point shooting to 33.6 percent.

With Luis waived, Boston retains multiple two-way contracts, including Max Shulga and Amari Williams, while keeping roster spots available for G League assignments and in-season call-ups.
