The Boston Celtics are waiving two-way player RJ Luis, league sources told @hoopshype. Boston acquired Luis from the Utah Jazz in exchange for two second-round picks and Georges Niang. Luis was recently Big East Player of the Year for St. John’s.
— Michael Scotto (@MikeAScotto) October 15, 2025Luis, who was recently named Big East Player of the Year at St. John’s, appeared in three preseason games for Boston. He totaled seven points, two rebounds, and two assists across 8 minutes per game in matchups against Memphis, Toronto, and Cleveland.
The 6-foot-6 wing signed a two-way contract with Boston following the February trade from Utah. The Celtics had viewed him as a developmental piece capable of contributing on both the NBA roster and the team’s G League affiliate.
Boston’s roster now focuses on a core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and newly acquired depth pieces, while maintaining flexibility under the second apron of the salary cap.
Luis’ brief tenure in Boston follows a strong senior season at St. John’s, where he averaged 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds while improving his three-point shooting to 33.6 percent.
With Luis waived, Boston retains multiple two-way contracts, including Max Shulga and Amari Williams, while keeping roster spots available for G League assignments and in-season call-ups.
