Even at their worst, Celtic ended the season as Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup winners. Martin O'Neill dragged the Bhoys from the jaws of defeat straight back to their throne and is a strong candidate to take the permanent job as a result.
Finding their next manager will be among the priorities at Celtic Park, but so will finding a new goalkeeper following Schmeichel's retirement.
The shot-stopper confirmed the news following a serious injury earlier this year, saying: "I have consulted several different surgeons and experts regarding my shoulder, and they have said that I should not expect to be able to return to elite football. I've thought a lot, but I think it's the right time [to retire]."

Whilst the Dane wasn't at his best towards the end of his Celtic career, they'll still miss his leadership and the quality he has when at his very best. Replacing that won't be easy.
Parkhead chiefs will be attempting to do exactly that this summer, though. According to Daily Record, Celtic have made contact to sign Jari De Busser from Go Ahead Eagles in the coming months.
The shot-stopper is valued at just £1.25m in the Netherlands and has already informed his club he plans to move on, telling reporters: "The plan is for me to take the next step.
"I have said it before, and it is also being done in consultation with the club. They are aware of the situation, and we discussed it before this season. But well, a club has to come forward first."
Celtic should take advantage of De Busser "plan"
From what De Busser has told reporters, he's simply waiting to receive an approach ahead of the summer. And with reports suggesting that Celtic have made early contact, they may well be the club that makes the first move.
The 26-year-old is certainly one to watch after becoming the undisputed No.1 at Go Ahead Eagles and helping them avoid the drop in the Eredivisie.

The numbers don't make for pretty reading as far as Viljami Sinisalo is concerned and the arrival of De Busser would surely end his time at Celtic's No.1.
What's most impressive about the Go Ahead Eagles man is his save percentage. Despite playing for one of the struggling clubs in the Netherlands, the 26-year-old maintained a 73.8% save percentage. Sinisalo, meanwhile, maintained just 60.5% and made less than two saves per 90.
With Schmeichel retired, the Bhoys should go all out to sign De Busser this summer.
