Carmelo Anthony has weighed in on Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards, saying the young guard’s next leap requires mastering the post-up. Speaking on 7PM in Brooklyn, Anthony explained, via HoopsHype, “We haven’t seen Ant slow the game down in the pick-and-roll, get a mismatch, go to the block and pick somebody apart from there.”
Anthony added that this evolution could elevate Edwards to a new tier. “When he gets to that level, now we’re talking Michael Jordan type of mentality,” he said, emphasizing the significance of creating dominance in the mid-post.
Edwards, 24, led the NBA in three-pointers made last season with 320, averaging 27.6 points per game. While his long-range game has become elite, the Timberwolves’ consecutive Western Conference Finals exits highlighted the need for more versatility in half-court settings.
Over the offseason, Edwards has been working on expanding his offensive toolkit. According to Shams Charania, he has focused on post-up and mid-range scoring moves inspired by Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, including fadeaways and touch-based scoring from multiple spots.
The Timberwolves hope this new skill set will make Edwards a go-to option in high-pressure playoff moments. By creating separation and finishing efficiently in the post, he could control the pace when defenses intensify and possessions become limited.
Anthony noted that Edwards’ ability to dominate in these situations would shift him into an elite category. “If he can get to the point where he knows he can go down there and destroy you in this region right here,” Anthony said, “that’s when you reach a whole different level.”
Edwards has been training at the Timberwolves’ facility since June, maintaining a rigorous routine aimed at consistency and skill refinement. His commitment suggests he is targeting a well-rounded offensive game for his sixth NBA season.
